A scarce, early, and important study, in the First Edition, hardcover, of the Negro's plight in the South, after the Civil War. Discusses the change from slavery to freedom and has a chapter on the Ku Klux Klan; who it is, who they are, and how they should be overthrown. The author, Charles Stearns, was a Northern teacher, Missionary, and Planter, and witnessed personally many of the scenes he described. The book has been professionally rebound in cloth with new end pages. Illustrated ( seven full page B&W and one quarter page B&W ). 562 pages. A sturdy book that is over 139 years old and is in remarkable condition due to its restoration. No dust jacket. Age foxing that does not effect the text or the illustrations.
