This is the First Illustrated Chartwell Edition (1954), originally sold by subscription only, and includes all of Churchill's final revisions. Each of these six volumes contain a full page color frontispiece, many black and white photographs of various aspects of World War II, drawings, many maps - some are fold out. This desirable set is complete in six volumes. Each is 7 in. x 9 3/4 in. Volume I, THE GATHERING STORM, 641 pages; Volume II, THEIR FINEST HOUR, 592 pages; Volume III, THE GRAND ALLIANCE, 725 pages; Volume IV, THE HINGE OF FATE, 802 pages; Volume V, CLOSING THE RING, 587 pages; Volume VI, TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY, 619 pages. Each volume includes appendices and index. Bound in original publisher's red cloth with embossed bust of Churchill on front and two matching title labels on spine with gilt lettering. Volume II, page 347 and pages 549, 550, 551 and 552 have a minor binding defect which resulted in a fold in the pages, however, the appearance or text is not affected. None in the set have any writing or names, bookplates or marks of any kind. The bindings are tight and straight. A very handsome set remarkably preserved through the years. No dust jackets, as issued. All volumes are in Near Fine condition.
