Originally published in two volumes by Harper and Brothers in 1844. A classic of Western Americana that recounts the adventures and suffering of a small group of Texans who set out across the plains in 1841 to seize neighboring New Mexico. The Degolyer edition is handsomely bound in two volumes and designed by Bradley Hutchinson, printed on acid free paper and indexed. This edition is limited to 500. Laid in the book is a facsimile map (16.75 x 11.75 inches) of the route of the first Santa Fe expedition. The map originally engraved by W. Kemble is reproduced from the original engraving in the 1844 edition of the book. Shown on the map are the routes of earlier explorers Pike and Gregg, as well as rivers, trails, and even the location of "herds of buffalo" north of Austin. Both volumes issued without dust jackets.
