Grading A Book's ConditionMany of our customers are building libraries of important books or just want a book that will appreciate over time. Condition is very important and we make an attempt to accurately describe the defects (if any) of every book. The abbreviations and standards of each grade used are as follows:
Very Fine (VF). The highest grade that can be assigned to a dust jacket or book. A pristine copy. No defects. This condition is used very sparingly as not many books meet this high standard.
Fine (F). This grade allows only for a few very minor defects. These minor defects will be noted in the description.
Near Fine (NF). A sub grade of Fine and is only a very small step down from Fine. You can expect defects to be small closed tears and/or very small chips to the dust jacket or a price clipped dust jacket. The book could have a bookplate or a previous owner’s name or inscription. Again all defects will be noted in the description.
Very Good (VG). Expect an attractive book but wear, tears and chips to the dust jacket. Still acceptable as a collectable condition. Defects that called for this grade will be noted in the description.
All defects in the dust jacket and book will be listed in the description. Then a grade will be assigned to the dust jacket and book.
The age of the book is also considered when assigning a condition. A recently published book will be held to a stricter standard than will a book 75 to 100 years old.
As hard as we try, there is no consistent method to insure that two people will assign the same condition to a book. That is the reason at Quinn & Davis Booksellers we offer this simple guarantee – You may return any book for any reason within 10 days for a full refund. We want you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase. Just notify us that you are returning the book in the same condition as received. We will pay the return postage if we fail to list a defect in the description.
